DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight out of school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
